Sonny Ciampa

Sonny Ciampa is a fourth-year political science major serving his second term as ASI president. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in politics while continuing to advocate for disability rights. Born and raised in Long Beach, Sonny understands firsthand many of the challenges students face both on campus and in the surrounding community.

Sonny’s journey in student leadership began with Beach Team, an ASI leadership program that introduced him to student government. He later served as senator at-large for athletics, where he worked to increase school spirit and student engagement at athletic events and throughout the campus community. Beyond ASI, Sonny is involved in Phi Alpha Delta, a professional law fraternity, and other student organizations on campus.

During his first term as ASI president, Sonny helped lead the student body through the first year of the University Student Union closure. He worked to maintain campus spirit and strengthen connections with students through initiatives such as Home at the Beach and Meet Your ASI President while advocating for improvements to support students during a period of significant change on campus.

Sonny’s personal experiences have also shaped his approach to leadership and public service. Growing up on the autism spectrum gave him an understanding of what it can feel like to be excluded or underrepresented and inspired his commitment to disability rights and advocacy for voices that often go unheard. He believes effective student leadership begins with being visible, listening to students and ensuring they feel supported and represented.

During his second term as ASI president, Sonny is focused on increasing student involvement, advocating for students’ basic needs and supporting the campus community through the second year of the Future U project. He hopes to continue creating opportunities for students to connect with one another and with ASI while ensuring student government remains accessible and responsive to the needs of the student body.

When Sonny is not on campus, you can often find him swimming at the beach or spending time with friends.
